Graves
Death should be punishing, but losing all your hard earned equipment to a lava lake is never fun. The changes here ensure that dying still has consequences while making it much less likely to lose all your progress.
Gravestones
Whenever you die in the Survival area, your items will be left behind in a grave where you died along with half of your experience. This grave will never despawn naturally.
You can break or right click a grave to retrieve the items and experience inside. For 10 minutes after a grave is created, only the grave's owner can claim it. After this period, anyone can claim the grave.
If you have more than 20 active graves, the oldest one will be removed and any items in it will drop as normal.
If you die to the void, a grave will not be created and any items in your inventory will be permanently lost. Soulbound items will still be preserved, as described below.
Soulbound Items
A new treasure enchantment can be found in nether structures such as Bastions, Nether Castles and Sanctums. Equipment enchanted with Soulbound does not drop on death and stays in your inventory.
Some special items are inherently soulbound and will never drop on death.
Naturally Soulbound Items
Recovery Compass
Nether Star
Dragon Egg
Items stored inside bundles and shulker boxes are not protected by being soulbound.
Only soulbound items stored in an inventory slot are kept on death.
